Key takeaways

  • AI SEO optimization builds on normal SEO. Google says there are no extra technical requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode.
  • To be cited, a page must be crawlable, indexed and eligible to show a snippet. For ChatGPT search, OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot must be allowed.
  • Clear answers, specific facts, named authors and consistent business details make content easier for AI systems to quote.
  • Measure with Search Console, analytics referrals and regular prompt checks. No one can guarantee a citation.

Quick answer

AI SEO optimization is the work of making your content easy for AI search features, such as Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT search, to find, trust and cite. It starts with solid SEO: crawlable, indexed pages. It then adds direct answers, specific facts, clear authorship and consistent brand information across the web.

AI SEO optimization is the practice of shaping your website and brand so AI search tools can find your content, understand it and cite it in their answers. The tools in question are Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, and similar assistants. People also call it generative engine optimization, or GEO, a term that comes from a 2023 research paper.

There is a lot of noise around this topic. This guide sticks to what the platforms publish about how inclusion works, plus the practical changes we make on client sites.

What is AI SEO optimization?

Classic SEO aims for a ranked link in the search results. AI SEO aims for your page to be one of the sources an AI answer draws from and links to. The two overlap heavily. Google's documentation on AI features says the same foundational SEO best practices apply, and that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

What changes is emphasis. AI answers summarize several sources at once, so content that states facts plainly and answers questions directly is easier to use. Brands that are described consistently across the web are easier to recognize.

How AI answers choose their sources

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Google says both features may use a query fan-out technique, running several related searches across subtopics to build a response, which can surface a wider set of pages than a classic search. To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. Google also notes that AI Overviews only appear when its systems judge them additive, so they often do not trigger.

Google is explicit that you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema markup to appear in these features. Traffic from them is reported inside the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type.

ChatGPT search

OpenAI uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features. Its documentation says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. A separate crawler, GPTBot, collects content that may be used to train OpenAI's models. The two settings are independent, so you can allow search while blocking training.

An AI SEO optimization checklist

  1. 1

    Make sure the basics work

Pages must be crawlable and indexed. Check robots.txt, noindex tags, canonical tags and internal links. Keep important content in text, not only in images or scripts.

  2. 2

    Decide on AI crawler access

Allow Googlebot and OAI-SearchBot if you want to appear in Google and ChatGPT search. Decide separately whether to allow training crawlers such as GPTBot.

  3. 3

    Answer the question early

Open key pages with a short, direct answer to the main question, then add detail. Use question-style headings that match how people ask.

  4. 4

    Use specific facts

Prices, dimensions, service areas, turnaround steps, eligibility rules and dates are easier to quote than general claims. Keep them current.

  5. 5

Show who is behind the content

Name authors and reviewers, link to their bios, and explain how the content was produced. This supports Google's guidance on helpful, reliable, people-first content.

  6. 6

    Keep business details consistent

Your name, address, services and descriptions should match across your site, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles.

  7. 7

Add structured data that matches the page

Schema is not required for AI features, but valid Organization, Product, LocalBusiness or Article markup helps search engines read the page. It must match visible content.

  8. 8

    Earn mentions on other sites

AI answers often draw on reviews, comparisons and industry articles. Being cited by trusted third parties helps both classic rankings and AI visibility.

What content tends to get cited

The GEO research paper tested ways of editing content and reported that some methods raised visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%, with results varying by domain. It is one study on a test benchmark, not a rule for every search. The general direction matches what Google recommends: clear, useful, well-sourced content.

  • Pages that answer one question clearly, with the answer near the top
  • Comparison tables with specific attributes, such as price structure, scope and fit
  • Statistics and facts with a named source
  • Step-by-step processes with numbered steps
  • FAQ sections that mirror what customers actually ask
  • Original data, such as your own survey or dated case results

One of our clients, an online private school in the US, added tuition answers to key pages and rewrote page titles to match how parents search, alongside about 120 new state and city pages. Clicks from Google roughly doubled in each month from May to August 2026 compared with the same months a year earlier. The online school SEO case study has the details. These are classic search clicks, but answer-first pages are the same format AI features draw from.

AI SEO versus classic SEO

How AI SEO optimization relates to classic SEO
AreaClassic SEOAI SEO optimization
GoalA ranked link in search resultsA citation or link inside an AI answer
Technical baseCrawlable, indexed, fast pagesThe same, plus access for AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot
ContentPages matched to keywords and intentThe same, with direct answers and quotable facts up front
AuthorityLinks and relevanceLinks, relevance, and consistent brand mentions across the web
MeasurementRankings, clicks, conversionsSearch Console, AI referral traffic, prompt checks, conversions

Because the base is shared, most businesses do not need a separate AI SEO program. They need their SEO program to include these steps. Technical problems block both, which is why we often start with a technical SEO review and then move to content SEO.

AI SEO for local and service businesses

People now ask AI tools questions like which clinic near them offers a treatment, or which accountant handles small business tax. The answers draw on websites, business profiles, reviews and directories together. For a local business, the practical steps are specific.

  • Keep your Google Business Profile complete and accurate: categories, services, hours and service areas. Google lists checking Business Profile details among its best practices for AI features.
  • Give each core service its own page with prices or price structure, who it is for, and how to book.
  • Answer the questions your front desk hears every week on your site, in plain language.
  • Ask satisfied customers for reviews that mention the service they used.
  • Make sure directories and social profiles use the same business name, address and phone number.

Common AI SEO mistakes

  • Blocking AI search crawlers by accident through a firewall or bot-protection setting
  • Publishing large numbers of thin AI-written pages, which Google's spam policies treat as scaled content abuse
  • Hiding key answers inside images, PDFs or tabs that load only with scripts
  • Adding structured data that does not match the visible page
  • Chasing mentions in AI answers while ignoring whether those visits convert

How to measure AI search visibility

  • Search Console: Google includes AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic in the Performance report under Web. Watch clicks and impressions on the pages you updated.
  • Analytics referrals: look for sessions from chatgpt.com and other AI assistants in your referral reports.
  • Prompt checks: keep a fixed list of questions your customers ask and check monthly whether your brand appears and which pages are cited.
  • Conversions: track whether AI referral visitors fill forms, book calls or buy. Google reports that clicks from pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality.

What AI SEO cannot promise

Pros

  • Builds on SEO work you likely need anyway
  • Clearer pages also help human visitors decide
  • Consistent brand details help local and AI search together
  • Opens another source of qualified visits

Cons

  • No one can guarantee a citation or a placement in an AI answer
  • AI answers vary by user, wording and time
  • Measurement tools are still limited
  • Some AI answers satisfy the search without a click

Be careful with any provider that sells special AI files, secret prompts or guaranteed placements in ChatGPT. Google states that no special files or schema are needed for its AI features, and indexing and serving are never guaranteed. If you are choosing between one hire and a team for this work, see hiring an SEO specialist or an SEO agency.

Frequently asked questions

What is generative engine optimization?

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is a term from a 2023 research paper for making content more visible in AI-generated answers. In practice it overlaps with AI SEO optimization: clear answers, specific facts, and content AI systems can find and cite.

Do I need special markup or an llms.txt file to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Google says there are no additional requirements, no special schema and no AI text files needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. The page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.

How do I get my website into ChatGPT search results?

Allow OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot in your robots.txt and in any firewall or CDN rules. Then make sure your pages answer questions clearly and your brand details are consistent across the web.

Does AI SEO replace traditional SEO?

No. AI search features rely on the same crawling, indexing and quality signals as classic search. AI SEO adds emphasis on direct answers, quotable facts and brand consistency.

How do I track traffic from AI Overviews?

Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type. For ChatGPT and other assistants, check referral traffic in your analytics tool.

Can an agency guarantee my brand will appear in AI answers?

No. AI answers change with wording, user and time, and Google states that indexing and serving are not guaranteed. An agency can commit to the work and to tracking, not to a placement.
