Key takeaways

  • SEO for personal injury lawyers starts with one page per case type and one page per office or city served.
  • Map results matter because injured people often search on a phone and call the first credible firm.
  • Case results pages need care: ABA Model Rule 7.1 prohibits misleading communications, and many states require disclaimers.
  • Paying a vendor for leads is different from paying for referrals. ABA Model Rule 7.2(b) limits the second.
  • Search competition in PI is intense, so most firms run SEO alongside paid search. No one can guarantee rankings.

Quick answer

SEO for personal injury lawyers means structuring a firm's website and local listings so it appears for searches like 'car accident lawyer' plus a city. It covers case-type and office pages, the Google Business Profile, reviews, helpful content, links and call tracking, all written within bar rules on advertising, results and solicitation.

SEO for personal injury lawyers is harder than SEO for most other practice areas. The same searches attract large national firms, directories and lead generation sites, and each signed case can be worth enough that competitors spend heavily to win the click. That does not make organic search out of reach for a local firm. It does mean the work has to be specific.

This guide covers how PI firms structure their sites, win local visibility, produce content that earns links, and track signed cases. It also covers the advertising rules that apply more often in PI than in any other practice area.

How does SEO work for personal injury lawyers?

Personal injury searches fall into three groups. Each needs a different kind of page.

Personal injury search types and the pages that serve them
Search typeExamplePage that serves it
Local, urgentcar accident lawyer near meGoogle Business Profile and office page
Case type plus citytruck accident attorney in a named cityCase-type page, localized for the office
Research questionshow long after an accident can I file a claimGuide or FAQ page

The first two groups bring calls. The third brings visitors earlier in the process and earns links from other sites, which helps the pages that bring calls rank.

Build one page per case type

A single 'Personal Injury' page cannot rank for car accidents, truck accidents, motorcycle crashes, slip and fall, dog bites, medical malpractice and wrongful death at once. Each is a separate search with separate questions.

  1. 1

List the case types you actually take

Only build pages for matters the firm handles and wants more of. A page for a case type you refer out sets the wrong expectation.

  2. 2

Answer the questions for that case type

Common causes, what evidence matters, how insurance usually works in your state or country, and what happens after the first call.

  3. 3

    Explain fees plainly

If you work on contingency, say how fees and costs are calculated, as your rules require. Clear fee information also reduces unqualified calls.

  4. 4

    Show who handles the case

Name the lawyers who handle this case type and link to their bios.

  5. 5

    Make contact easy

Phone number at the top, a short form and after-hours options if you offer them.

Win local visibility for each office

Many PI searches happen on a phone soon after an accident, and Google shows map results first. Your Business Profile needs the right primary category, complete services, real photos, accurate hours and a steady flow of reviews. Each office should link to its own office page.

We cover this in detail in local SEO for lawyers, including practitioner profiles and a review process that respects confidentiality. Two points matter most for PI firms: never offer anything in exchange for a review, and never confirm in a reply that the reviewer was a client.

Case results, referrals and the rules that apply

Personal injury marketing draws more ethics complaints than most practice areas, so the rules deserve their own section. The ABA Model Rules are the template most US states follow, but your state's adopted version is the one that binds you, and several states add their own filing or disclaimer requirements.

Case results and settlement amounts

ABA Model Rule 7.1 prohibits false or misleading communications about a lawyer's services, including statements that omit a fact needed to make them not misleading. Listing large verdicts without context can suggest that every client should expect a similar amount. Many states require a disclaimer on results pages and some restrict how results are presented. If you publish results, include the facts that make them understandable, state that each case is different, and have ethics counsel approve the format.

Specialist claims

Rule 7.2(c) says a lawyer may not state or imply certification as a specialist unless certified by an approved organization, which must be named. Words like 'specialist' and 'expert' in page titles and headings need checking against your state's rule.

Paying for leads and referrals

Rule 7.2(b) says a lawyer may not give anything of value for recommending the lawyer's services, with exceptions that include paying the reasonable costs of advertising. Paying an agency to run your SEO and ads is advertising cost. Paying a lead seller per signed case can look like paying for a recommendation. Check the structure of any pay-per-lead arrangement with your bar's guidance before signing.

Solicitation

Rule 7.3 bars live person-to-person solicitation for pecuniary gain, with limited exceptions. SEO and search ads are not solicitation because the person searches first. Follow-up calls to people who have not contacted you are a different matter.

Outside the US, similar limits apply. In England and Wales, the SRA Code prohibits unsolicited approaches to members of the public to advertise legal services, and requires publicity to be accurate. The SRA Transparency Rules also require firms offering certain services to publish cost information on their websites.

Links from other sites remain one of the ways search engines judge which firms to trust. In PI, the firms that rank well usually earn links through useful local content rather than by buying them.

  • Local road safety data guides based on public crash statistics for your city or county
  • Plain-language explainers on state deadlines, insurance steps or what to do at the scene
  • Scholarships, community sponsorships and safety events covered by local media
  • Expert commentary for local news on court decisions or new traffic laws, within your conduct rules

Google's guidance on helpful content asks whether a page shows first-hand expertise and whether it was written for people rather than for search engines. For legal topics, that means a named lawyer reviews each guide and the page shows when it was last checked.

Technical basics PI sites often miss

  • Pages that load quickly on a phone connection, since many visitors arrive from mobile searches
  • Click-to-call phone numbers on every page
  • LegalService or LocalBusiness structured data for each office, matching the Business Profile
  • No duplicate city pages that differ only by the city name
  • Forms that work on mobile and send to someone who responds quickly

Our technical SEO team checks these as part of any law firm engagement.

SEO and paid search together

PI firms rarely rely on SEO alone. Paid search places the firm at the top of results while organic rankings build, and it shows which case types and cities produce signed cases. That data then tells the SEO plan which pages to prioritize. Our Google Ads management team runs campaigns against the same case-type pages SEO builds.

Pros

  • Organic visibility keeps producing calls without a cost per click
  • Case-type pages improve paid search landing pages at the same time
  • Local content and links strengthen the whole site

Cons

  • Competition from national firms and directories is intense
  • Links and authority take sustained effort
  • Rules on results and specialist claims limit some common tactics

Choosing an agency for SEO for personal injury lawyers

Personal injury SEO attracts a lot of sales pitches. These questions help separate agencies that understand legal marketing from those that do not.

  1. Who writes the case-type pages, and does a lawyer at the firm approve them before they go live?
  2. How do you handle case results, specialist wording and disclaimers under our state's rules?
  3. Where do links come from? Ask for examples, and be wary of any answer that involves buying links.
  4. What do you report each month: rankings only, or calls, forms and signed cases by case type?
  5. Do you work with other PI firms in our market, and how do you handle that conflict?
  6. Who owns the website content, the Business Profile and the tracking accounts if we part ways?

Be careful with any agency that promises a set number of cases or a first-page position by a date. No one can guarantee rankings, and a firm that repeats those promises in its own marketing can end up with an advertising complaint.

It also helps to ask how the agency will split work between SEO and paid search, and who decides where the budget goes each month. The best arrangements tie both to the same signed-case data rather than reporting each channel in isolation.

Measure signed cases, not traffic

Traffic numbers can rise while signed cases stay flat. Track calls and forms by page, record which inquiries become consultations and which become signed cases, and review the numbers by case type each month. Pages that bring calls about matters you do not take need rewriting, not more traffic.

Frequently asked questions

Why is personal injury SEO so competitive?

Because each signed case can carry a large fee, national firms, directories and lead generation sites all compete for the same searches. Local firms compete best on local and case-type searches with specific, well-maintained pages.

Can personal injury lawyers publish case results?

In most US states, yes, with limits. ABA Model Rule 7.1 prohibits misleading communications, and many states require disclaimers or restrict how results are shown. Check your state's rules and have results pages approved.

Is buying personal injury leads allowed?

It depends on how the vendor is paid and what it does. ABA Model Rule 7.2(b) limits giving anything of value for recommending a lawyer, while allowing payment for the reasonable costs of advertising. Ask your bar or ethics counsel before signing a pay-per-case deal.

Should a PI firm do SEO or Google Ads first?

Many firms run both. Ads provide calls and data on which case types convert, and SEO builds pages that bring calls without a click cost.

Can an agency guarantee first-page rankings for personal injury?

No. No one can guarantee rankings, and a promise of that kind is a reason to look elsewhere.
