Ontario rules checked before launch
Canada's anti-spam law, CASL, governs commercial email and text messages and requires consent, sender identification and a working unsubscribe, with penalties of up to $10 million per violation for organizations. Ontario has no general private-sector privacy statute, so PIPEDA applies to how businesses collect and use personal information through forms, pixels and CRMs. The Competition Act bans drip pricing and now requires environmental claims to be backed by adequate and proper testing. Ontario also has sector bodies that touch advertising. The Home Construction Regulatory Authority licenses new home builders and expects honest advertising, and Tarion administers the new home warranty. The Law Society of Ontario requires lawyer marketing to be true, verifiable and not misleading, and bars calling oneself a specialist without certification. RECO oversees real estate advertising.
